Downtown Lynchburg Association Announces Leadership Transition

Lynchburg, VA – After nearly a decade of transformative leadership, Ashley Kershner will step down as Executive Director of the Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) later this summer.

Kershner has led the organization since 2016, during a period of significant growth and revitalization in Downtown Lynchburg. Under her leadership, DLA launched impactful programs such as Bright Nights on the Bluffwalk, Launch LYH, Movies in the Park, Fireworks on the Riverfront, Art Alley, and Blooms and Brews—while helping to attract new businesses, secure vital funding, and elevate Lynchburg’s profile as a thriving and creative urban center. During her tenure, the organization’s annual budget grew by 357%, and the staff expanded from one to 3.5 full-time employees.

“This role has been incredibly meaningful to me,” said Kershner. “Downtown Lynchburg is an extraordinary place, and I’ve been so fortunate to work alongside passionate community members, business owners, and leaders who care deeply about its future. As I step into a new chapter of service to the community, I leave with immense pride in what we’ve built together—and with full confidence that a new Executive Director will bring fresh vision and energy to carry this work forward and take it even further.”

Kershner will remain in her role through the end of July to support a smooth leadership transition. The DLA Board of Directors has officially launched the search for its next Executive Director, and the position is now posted on the organization’s website.

“Ashley has been a vital force behind Downtown’s growth and success over the past decade. She’s set a standard of excellence, diligence, and passion that has shaped our organization and community,” said Chris Boswell, DLA Board President. “As we look to the future, it’s critical that we continue this important work—supporting downtown businesses, executing a strong and strategic marketing plan, and providing steady nonprofit leadership. Ashley has laid a strong foundation, and we’re excited to build on the amazing progress she’s helped create.”

Downtown Lynchburg Association (DLA) is an accredited program of the Virginia Main Street and the National Main Street Center™ and a member of International Downtown Association. DLA remains committed to its mission of ‘creating a strong, vibrant, and welcoming downtown’ through marketing, events, economic development, and public space improvements.  For over twenty-five years, the organization and the City of Lynchburg have worked together to sustain and develop downtown as a vital economic, cultural, recreational, residential, and historic center for our community.
