Youth Summer Fun & Safety Resource Aims to Keep Kids Active, Engaged and Nourished

Summer Fun

As summer begins, the City of Lynchburg is making it easier than ever for families to find meaningful, safe and enriching opportunities for their children. The City has launched the Youth Summer Fun & Safety online resource guide, an easy-to-use site offering a centralized place for families to discover local activities, educational programs, safety tips and essential nutrition resources for the months ahead.

The initiative was developed to support the well-being of Lynchburg’s youth by connecting families to free and affordable summer offerings. From camps and outdoor exploration to creative outlets and reading challenges, the guide reflects the City’s commitment to helping kids stay engaged both physically and mentally during their time away from school.

Among the many featured activities are the Play All Day VA challenge which encourages children to explore local parks and green spaces; Waterbugs Camp, a free day camp focused on aquatic ecology and environmental learning by the Department of Water Resources; and the Batteau Experience Ride where kids can enjoy a free, educational trip along the James River as a part of the Batteau Festival activities. The Summer Reading Program hosted by Lynchburg Public Library is also highlighted, promoting literacy through incentives, events and activities designed to keep young minds sharp. Creative teens are invited to take part in the Tween & Teen Art Show where their artwork will be displayed in a public gallery setting—giving youth a platform to express themselves and celebrate their talents.

One of the most important components of the resource is its emphasis on food access. Lynchburg City Schools are once again participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program, providing free meals to children and teens aged 18 and under at over 18 sites around the city. No registration or ID is required, and meal sites are located throughout the city to ensure that all youth have access to nutritious food throughout the summer months.

In addition to programming and meal access, the Youth Summer Fun & Safety guide also offers practical information for parents and guardians including tips for digital safety, managing heat exposure and recognizing signs of stress or mental health challenges in children. Whether families are looking for opportunities to play, learn, stay safe or stay nourished, this new hub provides trusted, up-to-date information to make planning for summer simple and stress-free.
